Polyurethane, PUR
Polyurethane is a plastic material and holds extreme mechanical properties because of its high wear-, tear- and tensile resistance. The urethane is very friction- and abrasive persistent and withstands long periods of wear and compression. The polyurethane is very age,- UV- and ozone resistant and is well suited for outdoor environments. The material is commonly used in heavy duty industries as shock protection, vibration dampers, drill rubbers, washers and seals for drill,- mining- and machine industry. Because of the materials frequent appearance in heavy industry it may be acquired in very thick qualities.
The urethane can be acquired in lower hardnesses (durometer) to achieve a material that feels more like rubber. It may also be obtained in harder qualities for a stiffer, less bendable and a more compressive resistant material.
The material is resistant against oil and is therefore suited for seals in tanks and fuel pumps, as well as washers as accessories for screws, nuts and bolts.
The material is a pure plastic and contains no rubber but is still sometimes referred to as polyurethane rubber or urethane rubber. The reason it is named polyurethane rubber is because of the materials elasticity and resilient properties when compressed and is similar to a rubber material in its feel.
